Linda Sinclair (Julianne Moore) leads a life in the comfort zone. As a popular English teacher at a small high school in Kingston, Pennsylvania, the 40-year-old single woman prefers to relive the adventures of her books in her mind rather than let off steam in real life. But the clouds of a passionate emotional storm gather over her comfort zone when her former favorite student Jason Sherwood returns home unexpectedly. The exceptional student went to New York to try his luck as a great playwright - and failed miserably. Devastated by his failure, he is on the verge of giving up everything, giving up art and bowing to his father's wish that he become a lawyer. But Linda can't let that happen and decides to stage the play with the high school theater group. From now on, her life is suddenly turned upside down.
