Billy, who lives with his family in the woods of the Ozark Mountains, has only one wish: he desperately wants a pair of hunting dogs of his own! But the family is poor, and even his grandfather's financial support is not enough to fulfill the boy's wish. So Billy works and saves tirelessly until he can afford two puppies, which he then trains relentlessly to hunt raccoons. His animals quickly gain a reputation as the best hunting dogs in the area. These successes make the three inseparable, and in addition to the many adventures Billy has to master with his dogs, he also learns important lessons about friendship and loyalty.
