Matten, the father of Vivi's classmate Paul, has invited the whole class to come on his barge. Vivi makes fun of the old tub. Suddenly, smoke comes out of the engine compartment. The diesel engine is kaput – the 'Hoppe-tosse' is scrap! Matten decides to sell his berth license to old Wenning. Matten himself wants to go to sea again and Paul is to go to his Aunt Pia in Oldenburg. Vivi's detective instinct refuses to accept so much bad luck. After all, there are many reasons why an engine can break down, for example, sabotage!
