One often imagines a private detective to be a little more down-to-earth, or at least shirt-sleeved: Albert Campion (Peter Davison), on the other hand, is a blond, horn-rimmed glasses-wearing young man of noble birth and slender build who works as a private detective in London in the early 1930s. He is inconspicuous - which is precisely why people like to hire him.
Campion, who is equally at home in criminal and aristocratic circles and uses a variety of pseudonyms, investigates puzzling, often mysterious cases that others have often long since given up on. But it is the mysterious and seemingly unsolvable crimes that particularly interest the smart detective. He is loyally assisted by his assistant and butler, Magersfontein Lugg (Brian Glover), who was once a burglar, and his police officer friend Stanislaus Oates (Andrew Burt).
The elegant crime series was based on a series of books by Margery Allingham. The BBC adapted four novels for each series, which were originally broadcast as two separate one-hour episodes. In the first season, lead actor Davison himself sang the theme music; in the second season it was replaced by an instrumental version. A Lagonda 16/80 played a major role in the series and is now kept in Germany. (Wikipedia)
Part 1 of the first episode of the popular crime series based on novels by Margery Allingham.
Campion learns that a mediaeval relic called the Gyrth Chalice, which for hundreds of years has been in the care of the Gyrth family at the village of Sanctuary, is threatened by an international gang of art thieves. For the Gyrths the stakes are high – if they lose the Chalice, their country estate will revert to the Crown. Campion travels to Sanctuary with Val Gyrth, and almost at once Val's aunt Lady Diana is found dead in the middle of a wood, apparently frightened to death... it seems the gang is already on the job.
